The most striking feature of this notturno is movement 2, an adagio that is reminiscent of Mozart or more correctly predictive of Mozart as this came first. In this setting it has become a feature, almost a concerto, for the two clarinets both separately and in tandem. A joy to play and on repetition with a melody crying out for decoration, one has been incorporated in the score but I am sure it could easily be changed.. In contrast to this demonstration of the vocal qualities of the instrument, there are 12 bars in the lively finale that demonstrate the agility of the pair, an exciting foray that perhaps sounds more difficult that it is in reality for a clarinettist who has practised their scales and arpeggios in the key of G.
